The journey
A dedicated teacher and student of the arts. Van Robin's martial arts journey is as diverse as it is impressive.
Van's passion for martial arts began at a young age. His early exposure to capoeira led him to become a member of various capoeira groups, eventually founding his own club in Ann Arbor. Over the years he expanded his skills by training judo, Sambo, mui thai, jiu-jitsu, and Krav Maga.
Martial Arts Enthusiast Turned Head Coach
Van's Journey in the grappling arts began in 2010 when he joined the Eastern Michigan Judo and Sambo club. After years of training and competitive events, he achieved his black belt in 2020. His passion led him to become the head coach at Premier Martial Arts and later establish Tactical Advantage Martial Arts in 2024, where he shares his expertise in capoeira, judo, and sambo with the community.

Capoeira
Capoeira is not just a dance; it is a dynamic sport. Participants—historically armed with blades—execute striking kicks and acrobatic movements that come dangerously close to one another. In this practice, agility, stamina, and deception are prioritized over brute strength. While grace and fluidity guide evasive maneuvers, it's crucial to acknowledge that capoeira can be lethal with a well-timed blow. Embracing capoeira means embracing a legacy of resilience and skill.Capoeira is a remarkable art form that originated from the cultural influences brought to Brazil by enslaved people from West and West-Central Africa. Within Brazil’s diverse communities, these influences transformed into a powerful self-defense method disguised as an expressive dance, complemented by lively music.
Judo
Judo is a unique system of unarmed combat that has evolved into a powerful sport. It requires practitioners to skillfully throw, pin, or control opponents by using their force to an advantage. This discipline fosters calmness and confidence, rooted in a ritual of courtesy. Practitioners, known as jūdōka, wear a jūdōgi—a strong white uniform—and train barefoot.
Founded by Kanō Jigorō in 1882, the Kōdōkan School of judo emphasizes the "gentle way," focusing on safe techniques and randori, while preserving traditional kata forms. By the 1960s, judo organizations had spread worldwide, united under the International Judo Federation based in Budapest, Hungary.
Sambo
Sambo was recognized as the country’s official combat sport in 1938 with much help from the USSR All-Union Sports Committee.
The sport was practiced widely by the military and secret police that had a variation known as combat Sambo. This allowed for the inclusion of chokes, strikes, and weapon disarmament techniques. Cross-training and experimentation led to further variations in styles; like all martial arts, techniques are malleable and open to improvement and change.
Sambo was, in essence, a Soviet mixed martial art. However, it was only common among those residing within the USSR. But, as the sport continued to grow in popularity throughout the USSR, it became commonly practiced amongst public servants and citizens alike.
